In the Fall of 2006, Dow and Linda Whiting purchased 8 acres of land west of Nixa, MO with the intention of building what they envisioned as the ‘dream’ nursery. Their goal was to provide new and exciting, if not unusual, plants of exceptional quality in a natural setting. They imagined creating displays throughout the entire nursery where they could show people how to put different sizes, colors, and textures of plants together to build a beautiful landscape for their home.
Throughout the winter of 2006/2007, as weather allowed, they cleared the overgrown fence rows and creek bank and refined their plans for the nursery. The ice storm of January 2007 slowed their progress, but it did not break their resolve in pursuing their dream. In early May of 2007, they finally broke ground and the pieces quickly started to fall into place. Greenhouses were erected, roads were built, and the vision they had for this over-grown piece of property started to show itself. On June 1, 2007, Garden Adventures Nursery was officially opened.
Over the years, the nursery has evolved. More greenhouses have been added, display gardens have been built, an outdoor “classroom” was created, and each year the nursery is re-designed with new paths and displays. With all the changes and updates over the years, one thing has remained a constant, the Whitings’ dream of providing quality plants in a friendly, natural setting, and displayed in a way to help people create their own dreams of what their gardens can be.
